Lore

The Brim of Abarat takes its name from a mythological figure, Abarat.

Folk tales tell the story of Abarat's Braid. Abarat was a warrior born to an impoverished family, who made a vow to the Winds and the Sefra and her ancestors that she would not cut her braid until she had defeated the very concept of hunger. Abarat worked tirelessly to fight and feed the hungry, until one day when her braid had grown so long that it trailed behind her and her body had become so gaunt from giving away all the food she managed to forage. Too tired to keep going, she lay down in a glade to rest. The Winds, or the Sefra, or her ancestors (depending on the tale) were moved by Abarat's selfless deeds and cut off her braid, which they planted in the forest. Every strand of hair that was planted sprouted into luscious berry bushes and edible roots and fruits so juicy that an apple could feed three grown men. Abarat woke up and saw that her goal had been accomplished.
