Originally thought to have been a new species, the shiv fish is in fact the male variant of the crescent fish, whose sexual dimorphism turned out to be a lot more extreme than first assumed. The male shiv fish is much smaller and narrower than its female counterpart, which resulted in the original confusion regarding their taxonomy. The crescent fish females tend to protect the shiv fish from larger predators who sees the shiv fish as an easy snack - a fact that has made it a popular bait fish by fisherfolk.

Shiv fish can be used as bait for fishing.
