This bitterness is a miasma... It perforates the very essence of my being...

Maisu are demons from the Bitter Barrens, one of the lands of the afterlife. Maisu can possess objects such as dolls, furniture, or machines. They cannot possess people or animals but they can harm them and make them ill.

It is possible to summon a Maisu intentionally, but sometimes they appear without being summoned.[1]

Maisu are large, dark robed spirits that wear masks with glowing knot-like patterns. They wield a large crescent, and most are exceedingly fast and violent. Most Maisu are hostile on sight, but some are able to retain a semblance of self control and may be interacted with.

Maisu are often found at night when darkness falls on the land, the weather often foggy. However, Maisu can be present at any moment, anywhere from wandering near Cursing Teenagers, untamed wilderness, or cemetaries.

Combat Strategy

Recommended Stats:
12 ItemSymbol Force.png | 12 ItemSymbol Ward.png | 20 ItemSymbol Speed shadow.png

Maisu are one of the hardest to deal with, having an above average Force and Ward with relatively high Speed, most likely to take initiative 1st.

You might get away with spamming the attack button, but there are chances that the Maisu is able to strike at least once. Your best counter to Maisu would be having high Speed strike them more and Ward to protect yourself. If you have no Knot spells, investing in Force is a good alternative.

In the case where you have to face 2 Maisu, try to separate them both, if not, it is best to combat them as a group.

Lore

Maisu are spirits that used to be a Khelim, believed to have passed away with torment, despair or spitefulness. Being from the The Spiteful Badlands - they are filled with rage, hate and vengeance and can only go to The Peaceful Plains once they can accept and control said feelings. These spirits will usually stay in their realm, but they can be summoned into the physical world as a Maisu through negative energies and words, whether unintentionally like excessive swearing, or purposefully summoned by a Mystic.

Maisu, summoned intentionally or not has been known to possess objects, corrupting them in the process. Maisu and other spirits in general are more likely to possess objects that have movable joints such as a doll, foldable furniture or in very rare cases Elden machinery. Possessed machinery often try to hide their possession while continuing to work as normal but the ened result of their work tend to be ugly and warped or even dangerous objects.

Take note, Khelim!
Goodward-AmazedEmote.png The subject of this page has been affected by a recent Game update and the way it functions in-game has changed.

Prior to a Game Update, the Maisu used to say the Aged Khelim dialogue:

Can you see any Kinship between us, 'Khelim?' Hehe...Of course in those days, we were all journeyer crafters, most every one of us... With the odd mystic or two, of course.

I heard a story of a Maisu wearing the skin of an Asken and using the disguise to hunt people. The very thought of it gives me nightmares
