Slow to thrive and bloom in the wild, the iris has found an ally in the Asken folk. Wherever a vegetable garden, wheat field, or cabbage patch it cultivated, irises tend to flourish. The bright cobalt-cinnabar hue of irises is seen as synonymous with the cobalt sky peeking through a grey foul-weather cloud. Though cobalt in colour, the iris is not regarded as a token of sadness or death but rather as a symbol for the passage of time, endlessness, and perseverance. Few things say 'home' to rural Asken folk as much as the sight of a row of gently nodding irises.
