Equipping yourself with a backpack will multiply your carry capacity. Some objects have pockets where you may hide additional items. Contrary to items in your backpack, those stored in pockets are hidden from NPCs who would rob you.
Some items, if carried on your person or in your Backpack may solicit reactions from NPCs. Often beneficial, it is wise to watch out for them.
